Janssen named May鈥檚 Civil Service Employee of the Month

Jim Janssen, mailroom supervisor for the Facilities and Services Customer Service Center, has been named 葫芦影业鈥檚 Civil Service Employee of the Month for May.
He will be honored at a reception held from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at the Facilities and Services building on campus.
Janssen started at SDSU in the printing services department in 2009 as an assistant press operator on the six-color press. He moved to the Facilities and Customer Service Center in January 2022 as a storekeeper and transitioned to the mailroom supervisor later that year.
Jennifer Kindt, director of facilities business operations, called Janssen an invaluable asset to the department, particularly in his role of managing a busy mailroom. He oversees staff who process all the incoming and outgoing mail for campus and coordinates with all mailing and shipping companies and campus departments.
鈥淗is calm and pleasant demeanor is a huge asset to the team as he navigates many opportunities in the shipping and mailing area. From international packages to vendor issues, he strives to provide the best customer service possible. He consistently demonstrates exceptional accuracy, attention to detail and organizational skills in this area,鈥 Kindt said.
鈥淗is dedication to ensuring all mail and packages are promptly and accurately handled significantly contributes to the smooth operation of our campus mail system.鈥
Brent Turnipseed, acting head of the Department of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science and professor emeritus of agronomy, said he would interact with Janssen daily to drop off and pick up Seed Testing Lab mail.
鈥淛im has always provided excellent service and fostered a collegial relationship with all his peers and customers,鈥 Turnipseed said. 鈥淲e were always a special case as we came every morning to pick up seed samples sent in daily. Jim would go out of his way to make sure they were sorted and ready.鈥
Amber Healy, director of Jackrabbit Central stores, said Janssen easily establishes and maintains relationships with SDSU faculty, staff and students, helping in any way he can to make things run smoothly.
鈥淗e is dedicated and hardworking. He is organized and committed to constantly learning and developing best practices for managing routine activities in an efficient and effective manner,鈥 Healy said of Janssen. 鈥淗e brings a positive attitude each and every day he comes into the store, always smiling and happy.鈥
Janssen and his wife live in Volga and have two adult children: a son who lives and works in Pierre and a daughter and son-in-law who live and work in Sioux Falls.
Janssen served on the Cub Scout Pack 56 committee and was Webelos leader for two years. He moved to Troop 56 committee, eventually serving as unit commander for several years and being selected as unit commissioner of the year in 2002. He enjoys nature photography, going for walks and spending time at Oakwood Lakes State Park.
鈥淚 work with a great group at the Customer Service Center. I enjoy some of the challenges that come with making sure the mail and packages are delivered to the academic buildings and students,鈥 Janssen said.
All SDSU Employee of the Month selections are determined through a nomination process by the Civil Service Advisory Council. Each civil service employee of the month receives an appreciation monetary gift from the F.O. Butler Foundation. The trustees of the foundation recognize the importance of civil service employees and take this opportunity to thank them for their exemplary service.
